Smart Exit Lights: IoT Enabled Automated Testing of Exit Lights
Emergency and exit lighting systems require monthly function tests and annual duration tests to ensure performance when the main power supply fails. These tests typically involve pressing a test button on the light fixture to power the lights from the emergency power supply, and building owners are mandated to maintain a record of all test results. Manual testing, however, is labor-intensive, time-consuming, and may be disruptive to occupants. As a result, several facilities overlook these tests despite their importance in ensuring safety.
The ezCheck is an IoT-enabled automatic testing system (ATS) that automates the regular testing process of self-contained emergency lighting systems. The system consists of an electronic module that is designed to retrofit into existing light fixtures and requires simple rewiring to initiate the test. Light output and battery voltage of the emergency lights are recorded without interfering with the operations of the existing lights. If the module fails, the light fixture continues to operate normally.
